What is Stratamark?

Stratamark is a novel medical product, specifically designed and clinically proven for the prevention and treatment of stretch marks (Striae Distensae). Stratamark dries to form a thin, flexible and protective gel sheet that is gas permeable and waterproof. It does not penetrate below the level of the top layer of the skin (stratum corneum).

What are Striae Distensae?

Striae Distensae is the generic term for stretch marks. They are a well recognised skin change.

There are three different types of stretch marks:

1) Striae Rubrae (new stretch marks)
2) Striae Albae (old stretch marks)
3) Striae Gravidarum (stretch marks that occur during pregnancy)

They may appear everywhere on the body except the face, hands and feet. They usually occur in the typical “stretching areas” (breast, abdomen, thighs, hips, arms, back, etc.) of the body.

Are stretch marks detrimental to my health?

Although they are not detrimental to health, they can cause physical symptoms such as itchiness, tenderness and pain. Because of their appearance, they can also significantly affect a person`s self-esteem and self-perception.

What are the causes of stretch marks?

Hormonal changes. Stretch marks develop in times of increased glucocorticoid production, for example during puberty, pregnancy, with Cushing's syndrome or with external steroid use. High steroid hormone levels have a catabolic effect on the activity of fibroblasts and decrease the deposition of collagen in the ground substance of the dermal matrix. Clinical publications confirm that hormonal changes are one of the main reasons for stretch mark development. It is a defect in the basic structure of the elastic tissue. This theory was posted after a relationship was found between stretch marks and increased vaginal lacerations at birth. An extracellular matrix defect may also explain why overstretched tissue leads to ruptured collagen fibers and hence stretch marks in some individuals who experience rapid weight change e.g. during pregnancy or when suffering from Cushing’s syndrome. Mechanical stretching can lead to the rupture of the connective tissue framework during pregnancy, growth spurts in adolescence, obesity and rapid increase or decrease in weight.

Is there a direct relationship between stretch marks and the level of skin stretching during pregnancy?

According to a study by Chang et al. (2004), the stretching is not the primary cause of stretch marks. Studies found that there is no correlation between the development of stretch marks and weight gain per week. There is also no correlation between the greater percentage increase of abdominal/hip circumference during pregnancy and a greater number of stretch marks.

Can Stratamark be used during pregnancy and/or while breastfeeding?

Stratamark is not absorbed by the skin so it will not produce systemic side effects, and it is unlikely to produce local side effects. It is suitable to be used during pregnancy and while breastfeeding Stratamark is transparent and odorless. It does not contain alcohol, fragrances or parabens. No side effects have been observed when Stratamark is used as directed.

Is Stratamark suitable for children?

Stratamark is not absorbed by the skin so it will not produce systemic side effects, and it is unlikely to produce local side effects. Stratamark is transparent and odorless. It does not contain alcohol, fragrances or parabens.

No side effects have been observed when Stratamark is used as directed.

What if I have sensitive skin?

Stratamark is suitable for people with sensitive skin. Stratamark is completely compatible with human biology. It is not absorbed by the skin, so it will not produce systemic side effects, and it is unlikely to produce local side effects. Stratamark is transparent and odorless. What if I or a child accidentally swallow Stratamark?

Stratamark will not be absorbed into the gastrointestinal tract due its formulation, and it will be excreted without modification.

Is Stratamark a cosmetic or moisturizer?

Stratamark is a topical medical device European Class I medical device and is registered with the TGA and listed with the FDA. Unlike cosmetics and moisturizers, Stratamark is a medical product with a therapeutic action for the prevention and treatment of stretch marks. Stratamark is a topical product with clinical proven efficacy.

Why is Stratamark better than other creams, gels or oils, used to treat stretch marks?

Stratamark is a topical medical product with an unique gel formulation, specifically developed with a clinical efficacy, for the prevention and treatment of all types of stretch marks resulting from pregnancy, growth spurts, weight gain/loss and body building.

Will applying more Stratamark give me better results?

Applying more Stratamark than necessary will not give you better results. Stratamark is not absorbed by the skin, so applying extra gel does not enhance your results.

How long should I use Stratamark to treat stretch marks when I am pregnant?

Stratamark is recommended to be used from the beginning of the second trimester (13 weeks) or at the first sign of stretch marks. Approximately 3 tubes of Stratamark 50g will be required for a full treatment period until your child is born. Treatment should be continued following child birth for a minimum of 60 to 90 days. Stratamark should be applied once daily (or after washing) to remain in contact with the skin 24 hours a day / 7 days a week.

How long should I use Stratamark to treat existing stretch marks?

Stratamark should be used for at least 60 to 90 days (24 hours a day/7 days a week). Continued use is recommended until no further improvement is seen. Severe and/or older stretch marks may need longer treatment. Stratamark may also be used in combination with other stretch mark treatments (including laser therapy) with the advice of a physician.

How much Stratamark do I need?

Stratamark gel is a unique formulation that requires substantially less product per application than typical moisturizing creams or cosmetic preparations. • One Stratamark 20 g (0.7 oz) tube contains enough gel for approximately one month treatment for women in the late stages of pregnancy. • One Stratamark 50 g (1.75 oz) tube contains enough gel for approximately two months treatment for women in the late stages of pregnancy. In the beginning of pregnancy or after delivery one tube will last longer due to the smaller application area.

Where do I apply Stratamark? Are there restrictions?

Stratamark is intended to be used on all areas where stretch marks are present or could appear, mainly on the buttocks, abdomen, thighs, breasts, and back. It can be used on other areas of the body with stretch marks. Stratamark should not be applied on open wounds or compromised skin. Stratamark should not be placed in contact with mucous membranes or the eyes.

Does Stratamark have an odor?

Stratamark is odorless. It does not contain alcohol, fragrances, or parabens and is therefore suitable for pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, children and people with sensitive skin.

Will Stratamark still work if I forget to use it one day?

Simply continue using the gel and remember to keep applying it daily to make sure Stratamark remains in continuous contact with your skin (24 hours a day/7 days a week). If you do not use Stratamark daily, the efficacy may be reduced and you may not have the best possible result.

What are the side effects of Stratamark?

No side effects have been observed with the proper use of Stratamark. It is not absorbed by the skin, so it will not produce systemic side effects, and it is unlikely to produce local side effects.

What if my stretch marks are very old? Will Stratamark still work?
If your stretch marks are old, Stratamark will soften and flatten them. Keep using Stratamark until no further improvement is seen. Note that old stretch marks may require a longer treatment period.
